Amos 1:1-2
The words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders from Tekoa, which he envisioned in visions concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. He said, “The LORD roars from Zion And from Jerusalem He utters His voice; And the shepherds’ pasture grounds mourn, And the summit of Carmel dries up.”
2 Corinthians 4:7-8
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing;
- YOUR ENEMY RARELY TRAVELS ALONE
- Syrians – Consistently Beat Them Down
- Philistines – Enslaved Them
- Edomites – Broke Their Promises
Ammonites – Robbed Them of Their Future
Moabites – Destroyed Their Brother
The Children of Israel suffer at the hands of their enemies from the beginning of their entry into Canaan. This was a result of their partial acceptance of their pagan ways.
- THIS DIDN’T JUST HAPPEN OVER NIGHT
Success is never a product of one wise choice; likewise, failure is rarely the result of one mistake. It is the result of multiple mistakes made in a state of either ignorance or blatant disobedience.
Amos 2:6-8
GOD ’s Message: “Because of the three great sins of Israel —make that four—I’m not putting up with them any longer. They buy and sell upstanding people. People for them are only things —ways of making money. They’d sell a poor man for a pair of shoes. They’d sell their own grandmother! They grind the penniless into the dirt, shove the luckless into the ditch. Everyone and his brother sleeps with the ‘sacred whore’— a sacrilege against my Holy Name. Stuff they’ve extorted from the poor is piled up at the shrine of their god, While they sit around drinking wine they’ve conned from their victims.
Amos 2:12-13
“But you made the youth-in-training break training, and you told the young prophets, ‘Don’t prophesy!’ You’re too much for me. I’m hard-pressed—to the breaking point. I’m like a wagon piled high and overloaded, creaking and groaning.
- THEY DIDN’T VALUE PEOPLE
- THEY HAVE PERVERTED WHAT HE CALLS HOLY
- THEY HAD A BORROWED PRAISE
- THEY WERE DISILLUSIONED IN HIS HOUSE
THEY HAD SILENCED THE PROPHET
I have sent someone to warn you Amos 3:7
You still have a voice Amos 7:14-15
He will send a Tenderer
III. YOU DON’T HAVE TO STAY HERE
Use your voice Amos 3:9
Come Home to Him Amos 4:4-5
Rebuild the Altar Amos 9:11
- GOD’S PROMISE TO YOU
Amos 3:12
Thus says the LORD, “Just as the shepherd snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear, So will the sons of Israel dwelling in Samaria be snatched away— With the corner of a bed and the cover of a couch!
Even when you feel like it’s not enough, God says I’ll take that.
Amos 9:13-15
“Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “When the plowman will overtake the reaper And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; When the mountains will drip sweet wine And all the hills will be dissolved. Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel, And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, And make gardens and eat their fruit. I will also plant them on their land, And they will not again be rooted out from their land Which I have given them,” Says the LORD your God.
